Travel magazines are one of my sources of inspiration for new places to travel, reminiscing vacations taken previously and learning from the experiences of other travellers.

While most travel magazines on the racks focused too much on luxury travel, top hotels and paid advertising, I find the following magazines offering more substance and content suited for travellers without the deep pockets.

Top 10 Travel Magazines

1. Escape Magazine (SG), S$6, Bi-monthly

  • Bonus:  Some issues actually comes bundled with a separate destination supplement
  • Tips:  Subscribe for a year at S$5/issue

2. Asian Geographic Passport (SG), S$6, Bi-monthly

  • Focuses on Asian destinations and cultures
  • Great photography tips
  • Not flooded with advertisements
  • Tips:  Subscribe for 2 years at S$5/issue. Digital issues are available at USD18/12 issues

3. Lonely Planet (SG), S$7.50, Bi-monthly

  • The “Lonely Planet” brands speaks for itself
  • More destination feature than endless pages of luxury hotels, spas, cruises…
  • Tips:  Subscribe for a year for a cheaper read

4. Budget Travel (UK), S$XX, Monthly

  • As the name explains… “Budget Travel”. From Arthur Frommer.
  • A pretty “thin” publications. Does not publish as many pages as most magazines
  • Focus on budget travel and has tonnes of travel tips
  • Tips:  Subscribe online at USD32/10 issues. Delivers internationally.

5. National Geographic Traveller (US), S$XX, 8 issues/year

  • Features the historical and cultural side of destinations
  • Bonus: A free map of Italy with subscription
  • Tips:  Subscribe online at USD32.95/8 issues/yr or get a digital issue of iPad at XX

6. Wanderlust (UK), S$

  • One of my favourite magazine that covers a balance mix of top cities and the roads less travelled
  • More on experiences than hardcore history background and facts
  • Tips:  Subscribe to the digital issue through Zinio at S$36.82/8 issues

7. TRVL Magazine (iPad), FREE

  • Free digital magazine with dedicated destination per issue
  • Designed for easy navigation on the iPad

8. RCI Endless Vacation Magazine (iPad), Seasonal (Spring/Summer..), FREE

  • The thing I like about this magazine is that it’s free and designed for iPad
  • Very neat interface
  • One issue every quarter/season… long wait….

9. Travel & Leisure – South Asia (iPad version), S$11.03/12 issues

  • The only reason this is featured is because it’s cheap! Subscribe through Zinio at less than S$1/issue
  • Based in India, most articles cover the Indian cities (which I love..)
  • Being a “Travel & Leisure” magazine, most pages are dedicated to high-living, travel luxuries etc…
  • There are still some features on destinations so at a price tag of S$1/issue, it’s still worth a read

10. AFAR (US), S$24.49/6 issues

  • Winner of America’s Best Travel Magazine
  • A little skewed to luxury travel but they have interesting articles and rather lengthy too
